If you are parents of a child or children 5 years of age or younger,  you NEED to ask all or most of the following questions when you call to make your first dental appointment.   These questions may vary if your child has special needs or autism.

1.  Do you routinely see child under the age of 18 months?
2.  At what age do you recommend the first dental exam for a child?
3.  Does your office do fillings for children 5 years of age and younger?
4.  At what age do you take x-rays for the first time?
5.  Does your office treat special needs and autism patients?
6.  Are you familiar with XYLITOL to prevent tooth decay?
7.  Do you ever use Silver Diamine Fluoride to prevent tooth decay?
8.  Do you have "laughing gas" for patients who are nervous about having fillings done?

These are examples of good general questions to give you an idea of the abilities and knowledge of the dentist.   You can also ask other questions depending upon your specific concerns. I am giving you this information, because 90% of all general dentists in America do not treat or trained to treat children 6 years of age and younger.  They will be not tell you this, but they will refer your child to a pediatric dentist if treatment is needed.   The best advice is take you children on their 1st birthday to a pediatric dentist and remain as a long term patient.  This is another TRUTH ABOUT DENTISTRY.

Your trustworthy dental advisor,
Dr. Steve Branam
